"Hollywood Inside the Oscars"

There is the ceremony, and then there is everything that happens in between.

Beyond the precision of speeches and the choreography of applause, the true texture of the Oscars lives in quieter, more fleeting exchanges. In the soft blur of a crowded room, under warm, diffused light, the world’s most recognizable faces momentarily step out of performance and into something more disarmingly real.  Leonardo DiCaprio & Teyana Taylor Credit A.M.P.A.S

A screenplay is a written document that establishes the foundation of a film, providing its dialogue, setting, and action, and dictating its structure and story. But it is more than a blueprint; it is an art form.

Screenwriting: Takes on LA Noir presents scenes from three screenplays spanning 50 years: Double Indemnity (1944), written by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler; The Long Goodbye (1973), written by Leigh Brackett; and Pulp Fiction (1994), written by Quentin Tarantino. By examining three takes on similar subjects, themes, and settings, this gallery explores different approaches to storytelling and the art of screenwriting. Set against the backdrop of LA, these screenplays established, updated, and subverted the conventions of film noir.

Screenwriting: Takes on LA Noir is curated by Nicholas Barlow, assistant curator, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

Founded in 2017, the Prize offers a valuable platform for artists from the region. It features both famous and lesser-known depictions of New York in film and television, visual and performing arts, music, poetry and literature, and even fashion, painting a collective, moving, and sometimes funny version of a city that has captured the imagination of the world.

The full-floor exhibition is organized around the types of urban spaces where the stories of New York are told.

The Last Supper of Leonardo da Vinci (Cenacolo Vinciano) is one of the most famous paintings in the world. This artwork was painted between 1494 and 1498 under the government of Ludovico il Moro and represents the last "dinner" between Jesus and his disciples.

In order to create this unique work, Leonardo carried out an exhaustive research creating an infinity of preparatory sketches. Leonardo abandons the traditional method of fresco painting, painting the scene "dry" on the wall of the refectory. Traces of gold and silver foils have been found which testify to the artist's willingness to make the figures in a much more realistic manner, including precious details. After completion, his technique and environmental factor had contributed to the eventual deterioration of the fresco, which had undergone numerous restorations.

The most recent restoration was completed in 1999 where several scientific methods were used to restore the original colors as close as possible, and to eliminate traces of paint applied in previous attempts to restore the fresco.

EXHIBITION . UK

KOEN VANMECHELEN

WE THOUGHT WE WERE ALONE

9 May - 22 November 2026

Will we ever exist, Carrara White marble, patinated bronze, 220 x 200 x 100 cm

Renowned Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen presents his first solo sculptural exhibition in Venice, We Thought We Were Alone, at Palazzo Rota Ivancich, coinciding with the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, running from the 9 May - 22 November 2026. The exhibition, curated by the UK independent curator and writer James Putnam, will feature 40 new sculptures and installations, created specifically for the exhibition. Moving beyond human-centred perspectives, it will explore the dynamic relationship between living organisms and the inorganic environment. Spanning the three floors of the Palazzo’s history-marked, transient structure, the exhibition is a space of sanctuary located in Venice’s Castello district near San Marco. Visitors are immersed in the key themes that define Koen Vanmechelen’s practice - crossbreeding, hybridity, and identity - shaped by his vision of a Cosmopolitan Renaissance. Moving beyond traditional sculpture, the exhibition positions art as a positive force capable of inspiring social and biological transformation. Palazzo Rota Ivancich not only functions as a backdrop but as a structural part of the exhibition: a layered interior where rooms become thresholds, with the building’s own history of repair and reinvention echoing the show’s central theme, reflecting further the interconnectedness of human beings and nature. Moving across three floors, the visitor experiences the palazzo as a ‘cocoon’ - a space where forms loosen, reconfigure, and return changed.

Materials including bronze, marble, glass, photography, and video are brought together to create a dialogue between past and future, a tension between the individual and the collective, matter and form, inheritance and transformation. Classical statuary is reinterpreted amid a diverse menagerie of animal forms, while the works interconnect biology and culture, the local and the global, solitude and solidarity.

David Hockney

Presented at Serpentine North, the exhibition will showcase seminal works, shown in the UK for the first time. Admission will be free to the exhibition which is the artist’s first at Serpentine.

From painting, drawing, printmaking, set design, and photography to media ranging from fax machines to iPads, Hockney demonstrates his deep understanding of art history coupled with his interest in modern technology to create new ways of seeing and presenting. David Hockney's rich and enduring body of work reveals his passion for contemporary life and curiosity about the world, epitomized by his signature phrase, “Love Life.”

A major exhibition of more than 400 of the artist’s works from 1955 to 2025 was recently presented at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris featuring international, institutional, and private collections’ works, as well as paintings from the artist’s own studio. The exhibition – curated at David Hockney’s request by Sir Norman Rosenthal, the former Exhibitions Secretary of London’s Royal Academy of Arts, in close collaboration with Suzanne Pagé, Artistic Director of Fondation Louis Vuitton, and her team brought together works in a variety of media including oil and acrylic painting, ink, pencil and charcoal drawing, digital art (iPhone, iPad, and computer drawings), immersive video installation and photographic drawing. Spanning seven decades of ground-breaking creativity, David Hockney 25 highlighted not only Hockney’s iconic early works but also places a special focus on the past 25 years, the early part of the 21st century, which has inspired the event's title.

While the world came in the Spring of 2020, Hockney produced over a hundred images on his iPad within just a few weeks. Working digitally lets him capture the essence of each scene quickly and precisely. Much like the Impressionists, Hockney skilfully records changes in light and weather, but uses a vivid, radiant palette. His compositions combine flat areas of bold colour with playful pop-like touches. As the days pass, lockdown lifts, and spring transitions into summer, then autumn and winter. Hockney didn’t stop at painting spring, he captured the whole cycle of the year.

The exhibition will include Hockney’s recent works: the celebrated Moon Room which reflects his lifelong interest in the cycle of light and time passing. It will also feature digital paintings from his Sunrise body of work.

A Year in Normandy, a ninety-metre-long frieze, inspired by the Bayeaux Tapestry, showing the change of seasons at the artist’s former studio in Normandy, will also feature in the show.

David Hockney is interested in how art and technology can come together in new ways. Recommending that people slow down and notice the beauty of the world around them, he believes that simple, everyday beauty, like a sunrise, is worth celebrating.

David Hockney (b. 1937 in Bradford, Yorkshire) has been at the forefront of the international art world for more than six decades. He emerged as one of the exceptional talents in the new generation of British artists in the early 1960s. Throughout his extraordinarily prolific career, he remains endlessly inventive and committed to celebrating the world around him.

Hockney is fascinated by the language of representation in a variety of forms. He explores the conventions of Chinese and Japanese painting as well as the traditions of European art. He experimented with abstraction; however, he steadfastly remains a figurative artist. Constantly questioning the world around him, he draws and paints from life, from memory, and from imagination.

Across his career he has created many bodies of works and numerous individual paintings which are now viewed as iconic. His experimental paintings in the early sixties announced the arrival of a new artistic voice. These were followed by a celebrated series of Hollywood swimming pools where the young Hockney arrived in 1964, documenting the city’s seductive charm and ambience from the position of an outsider. Often poetically titled, works such as A Bigger Splash and Beverly Hills Housewife have become celebrated paintings and part of the modern vernacular.

Can a photographic portrait ignite political imagination? NY - USA, The Museum of Modern Art

Ideas of Africa: Portraiture and Political Imagination explores how photographers and their sitters helped shape and spread Pan-African solidarity in the mid-20th century. Reflecting the international spirit of the era, the exhibition brings together striking images from photographers working in Central and West African cities. Their portraits capture everyday citizens, vibrant music scenes, and powerful expressions of youth culture, all of which mirrored the political transformations of the time.

The works of Jean Depara, Seydou Keïta, Malick Sidibé, and Sanlé Sory depict life in Bamako, Bobo-Dioulasso, and Kinshasa during an era when decolonization swept the African continent alongside the rise of the US Civil Rights movement. The exhibition also highlights James Barnor and Kwame Brathwaite—photographers based in Europe and North America—whose images contributed to the global construction of Africa as both a political idea and cultural force. Contemporary contributions from artists such as Samuel Fosso, Silvia Rosi, and Njideka Akunyili Crosby demonstrate the enduring relevance of these themes today.

Brimming with possibility, Ideas of Africa: Portraiture and Political Imagination celebrates the photographic portrait as a powerful vehicle of creativity and a lasting catalyst for political thought across the world.

fashion.

Penn&Fashion

In Paris, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) celebrates its 30th anniversary season with this retrospective of one of the greatest fashion photographers. The exhibition unfolds chronologically, retracing Irving Penn’s career from 1947 to 2008. For over sixty years the photographer embodied an aesthetic of timeless modernity in which the restraint of his compositions (always taking place in his modest studio), the precision of his gaze, and his respect for his subjects, attest to his artistic vision. Penn was steeped in modernistic painting and European surrealism. Irving Penn (1917 – 2009) was an American of Russian origin. He studied at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Arts. It was thanks to Vogue’s art director, Alexander Liberman, that he started to investigate photography. Liberman had recognized in Penn “a mind, and an eye that knew what it wanted to see”. Thus, one of the greatest fashion photographers of our time was born out of “luck”, without having studied the craft. Penn’s first assignment for Vogue was in Lima. There he photographed the model as a young tourist visiting the Peruvian capital. Then, he continued on his own to Cuzco where he photographed the Quechua people in their traditional clothes – making an intersection of ethnographic and fashion photography. In the summer of 1950, he had his first assignment to Paris. There he met his muse and wife to be in the beautiful Swedish model and former dancer, Lisa Fonssagrives. From that meeting emerged a series of photographs that would become icons in the history of fashion photography. However, true to his passion, Penn, moved from Haute Couture (Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Rochas…), to taking pictures of street vendors, artisans, and laborers, some of which are exhibited at the MEP.

Liberman also commissioned him to make a series of portraits from the world of fashion and artists that had settled in New York in the aftermath of the Second World War. Among those were Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, Christian Dior, Elsa Schiaparelli, the Duchess of Windsor, and the dancers of New York’s Ballet Society. The 1960s and -70s marked a change in the fashion industry with the introduction of ready-to-wear. Irving Penn photographed, among others, André Courrèges’ futuristic designs, and Emanuel Ungaro’s metal dresses. Then, he continued his travels around the world and photographed indigenous peoples from Nepal, New Guinea, and Morocco in their traditional dress. These pictures are also interesting in an anthropological sense, as those clothes are increasingly giving way to a more standardized and global way of dressing. With the arrival of Anna Wintour as the creative director of Vogue, in 1983, Penn was assigned to Paris again. During this period, he created striking images of Yves St Laurent’s designs, as well as Karl Lagerfeld’s creations for Chanel as well as those of Christian Lacroix.
However, the collaboration that truly defined this period was his long relationship with Issey Miyake. It resulted in some of the most iconic fashion photographs of the later part of his career. At the end of his life, having attained a distinguished position at Vogue, Irving Penn became highly selective in choosing the designers whose creations he photographed. He liked to heighten the neo-Gothic character of these designs. Fashion became a meditation on time, vanity, and mortality. Before his death in New York in 2009, at the age of 92, he donated his professional archives to the Art Institute of Chicago and established The Irving Penn Foundation in 2005. Anyone with a creative mind, a sense of beauty and an interest in art, will be thrilled by this fabulous retrospective of one of our times most fascinating fashion photographer.

The Significant Movies and Moviemakers gallery reopens with a three-gallery experience showcasing the classic drama Casablanca (1942), the groundbreaking film Boyz N the Hood (1991), and acclaimed documentarian Lourdes Portillo. The Casablanca gallery features original production objects that highlight beloved characters, settings, music, and the cinematic virtuosity that made this film one of Hollywood’s most enduring classics. While timeless in its romance and artistry, Casablanca is also inextricably tied to its production environment during WWII. The gallery explores this historical context, including the influx of European émigrés who contributed their talents both in front of and behind the camera, echoing the narrative themes of the film itself. This gallery is curated by Associate Curator Dara Jaffe.
