Menorca is one of them.
The lesser-known jewel of the Balearic Islands, Menorca offers a gentler, more contemplative rhythm than its celebrated neighbours, Ibiza and Mallorca. Here, nature remains gloriously present: crystalline waters, rugged rocks, secluded coves, fragrant Mediterranean flowers, palms swaying in the breeze and whitewashed villages brightened by bougainvillea.
Recognised by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve in 1993, the island has preserved much of its natural character and an authentic sense of place. The famous Camí de Cavalls, a 185-kilometre historic coastal trail divided into twenty sections, traces the island’s shoreline and reveals landscapes that seem made for long walks, quiet contemplation and endless sea views.
Menorca is an invitation to experience Spain differently - slowly, beautifully, through the senses. On the island’s tranquil southeastern coast, S’Algar unfolds around the sea with an understated charm. It can serve up to thirty people at a time and offers a sophisticated atmosphere with contemporary and modest cuisine. The décor was designed by Christophe Tollemer with its own identity that is consistent throughout, blending the Palais Royal Restaurant into its surrounding environment. On sunny days, the terrace is transformed to offer lunch and dinner in the middle of the garden. The combination of his Greek heritage and his fundamental training in French gastronomy at the Institut Paul Bocuse give the Palais Royal Restaurant’s two Michelin-starred Chef a unique culinary identity. Former member of Joël Robuchon’s exclusive team, Philip Chronopoulos stands out due to his experience in various prestigious and exacting establishments before taking over the kitchens of the Palais Royal Restaurant in 2015. Having been awarded his first star in 2017, he received his second in 2022. In 2020, he expanded his portfolio to become Executive Chef of the Nolinski hotels in Paris and Venice, the latter being scheduled to open in 2023. In Paris, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) celebrates its 30th anniversary season with this retrospective of one of the greatest fashion photographers. The exhibition unfolds chronologically, retracing Irving Penn’s career from 1947 to 2008. For over sixty years the photographer embodied an aesthetic of timeless modernity in which the restraint of his compositions (always taking place in his modest studio), the precision of his gaze, and his respect for his subjects, attest to his artistic vision. Penn was steeped in modernistic painting and European surrealism. Irving Penn (1917 – 2009) was an American of Russian origin. He studied at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Arts. It was thanks to Vogue’s art director, Alexander Liberman, that he started to investigate photography. Liberman had recognized in Penn “a mind, and an eye that knew what it wanted to see”. Thus, one of the greatest fashion photographers of our time was born out of “luck”, without having studied the craft. Penn’s first assignment for Vogue was in Lima. There he photographed the model as a young tourist visiting the Peruvian capital. Then, he continued on his own to Cuzco where he photographed the Quechua people in their traditional clothes – making an intersection of ethnographic and fashion photography. In the summer of 1950, he had his first assignment to Paris. There he met his muse and wife to be in the beautiful Swedish model and former dancer, Lisa Fonssagrives. From that meeting emerged a series of photographs that would become icons in the history of fashion photography. However, true to his passion, Penn, moved from Haute Couture (Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Rochas…), to taking pictures of street vendors, artisans, and laborers, some of which are exhibited at the MEP.
Liberman also commissioned him to make a series of portraits from the world of fashion and artists that had settled in New York in the aftermath of the Second World War. Among those were Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, Christian Dior, Elsa Schiaparelli, the Duchess of Windsor, and the dancers of New York’s Ballet Society. The 1960s and -70s marked a change in the fashion industry with the introduction of ready-to-wear. Irving Penn photographed, among others, André Courrèges’ futuristic designs, and Emanuel Ungaro’s metal dresses. Then, he continued his travels around the world and photographed indigenous peoples from Nepal, New Guinea, and Morocco in their traditional dress. These pictures are also interesting in an anthropological sense, as those clothes are increasingly giving way to a more standardized and global way of dressing. With the arrival of Anna Wintour as the creative director of Vogue, in 1983, Penn was assigned to Paris again. During this period, he created striking images of Yves St Laurent’s designs, as well as Karl Lagerfeld’s creations for Chanel as well as those of Christian Lacroix.
However, the collaboration that truly defined this period was his long relationship with Issey Miyake. It resulted in some of the most iconic fashion photographs of the later part of his career. At the end of his life, having attained a distinguished position at Vogue, Irving Penn became highly selective in choosing the designers whose creations he photographed. He liked to heighten the neo-Gothic character of these designs. Fashion became a meditation on time, vanity, and mortality. Before his death in New York in 2009, at the age of 92, he donated his professional archives to the Art Institute of Chicago and established The Irving Penn Foundation in 2005. Anyone with a creative mind, a sense of beauty and an interest in art, will be thrilled by this fabulous retrospective of one of our times most fascinating fashion photographer.
